In our 2021 The deal in focus report, we surveyed heads of M&A at ASX200 companies to take a deeper dive into deal activity in the current climate and how to realise greater value across the M&A lifecycle.

Australia entered its first recession in 29 years in 2020, driven by COVID-19–induced physical distancing measures. These forced thousands of businesses to down shutters, sending unemployment as high as 7.5%.

Thanks to Australia's effective handling of the pandemic, together with huge fiscal and monetary stimulus measures, the situation has remarkably improved today. Australia’s economy has rebounded faster than every other developed country, consumer spending has surged and business confidence has jumped to record highs.

Key themes of the report:
  • Strategic transformation as a part of recovery
  • Climate and Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG)
  • Domestic targets continue to be the key focus
  • COVID-19 as a catalyst for succession in Private Markets and IPOs
  • Expected increase in M&A activity.
